Bedroom design trends come and go so frequently that it can be difficult to keep up. Still, it's a good idea to remain informed of these shifts in design so you can ensure your living space never looks outdated. One bedroom design element, which is on track to gain more recognition in 2025, will make your space look and feel good. Sustainable, secondhand furniture is the 2025 bedroom design element to watch out for, as confirmed by Erika Dale, interior designer and founder of Erika Dale Interior Design.

"I absolutely agree that sustainable, secondhand furniture will continue to gain popularity in 2025," Dale revealed while speaking exclusively to House Digest. "While I wouldn't necessarily call it a trend, more people are understanding the impacts that cheap, fast furniture has on our environment and how they can play a small role in making positive changes." Given this information, 2025 might be the perfect time to leave those fast furniture pieces–which don't often remain in good shape over the years–in the dust.

Although sustainable furniture is a great way to make your home more eco-friendly, you should still consider weighing the pros and cons to help decide whether it is a good fit for you. "The biggest advantage of buying furniture from brands that are focused on using sustainable materials, manufacturing processes, packaging, and shipping options is that you are playing your part in protecting Earth's resources and reducing your carbon footprint," Dale explained while speaking exclusively to House Digest. Another perk the interior designer highlighted is that selecting sustainable furniture keeps materials out of landfills. If you are a fan of sustainable furniture that falls into the vintage or antique category, you are likely already familiar with the next perk: these pieces offer unique charm and personality that just cannot be replicated by fast furniture pieces, according to Dale.

The great thing about sustainable furniture is that the aforementioned pros far outweigh the cons. Dale revealed there is really just one major downside you need to be aware of. "The only disadvantage of buying from sustainable furniture brands is that sometimes (not always!) their price point can be a bit higher to offset their environment-friendly practices, especially compared to cheap, fast alternatives from big box stores or online retailers," she explained. Fear not, though, because secondhand furniture is the perfect affordable solution.

Dale went on to share a few recommendations for those who are interested in purchasing furniture made of sustainable materials for their home design. "For sourcing secondhand pieces, first look on local sites like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist to see if you can find great pieces nearby," the expert revealed while speaking exclusively to House Digest. "Sites like Chairish and Etsy also have vintage or reclaimed pieces for sale, though you will have to pay for shipping."

Unlike finding sustainable furniture secondhand, shopping from sustainable furniture brands requires more digging. According to Dale, you need to take the time to research which of these brands "have earned certifications for sustainable and ethical material sourcing, manufacturing processes, employee labor, packaging materials, and shipping options." It's also a good idea to opt for brands that ship out of the same country you reside in. For example, if you are in the U.S., purchase from U.S.-based sustainable furniture brands. "In addition, brands manufactured in the U.S. mean less impact on shipping, as well as transparent manufacturing regulations," Dale explained.
